Vikas and Virasat: The Sankalp for Viksit Bengal

The 2026 Vidhansabha elections represent a critical moment—perhaps the last opportunity—for the people of Bengal to safeguard the state’s future and prevent it from descending into prolonged instability. The foundation of a Hindu-majority West Bengal was shaped through determined efforts during the tumultuous period leading up to independence. Leaders such as Syama Prasad Mukherjee, Ashutosh Lahiri, Suniti Kumar Chatterji, and Pramatha Ranjan Thakur, among others, played pivotal roles in ensuring that Bengal retained a distinct identity within India on June 20, 1947.Since then, Bengal has experienced both remarkable achievements and significant challenges in its developmental journey. However, the past five decades—and especially the last decade—have raised serious concerns among citizens regarding access to essential services such as healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. There was a time when Bengal stood among the top contributors to India’s GDP, ranking third nationally. Today, it has fallen significantly in economic rankings, a decline often attributed by critics to administrative inefficiencies and governance challenges under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. As the state approaches the 2026 elections, many view this as a decisive juncture that will shape Bengal’s trajectory for years to come.
With the 2026 “Dharmayuddh” approaching, the Sankalp Patra for BJP in West Bengal was released today in Kolkata by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Rooted in the spirit of Antyodaya, the manifesto outlines a wide range of measures aimed at uplifting every section of society. A major focus has been placed on national security, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal immigration under the principle of “Detect, Detain, and Deport.” The proposed land acquisition process along the Indo-Bangladesh border is projected as a landmark step toward strengthening the integrity of Bengal’s border districts. In response to the state government’s Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, the BJP has proposed “Annapurna Bhandar,” offering ₹3,000 per month to women. Relief has also been promised to state government employees, with a commitment to implement the 7th Pay Commission within the first 45 days of forming the government. The social sector features key promises such as the implementation of Ayushman Bharat, which the manifesto claims had been stalled by the current state administration. Additional commitments include ₹9,000 per year for farmers, ₹3,100 per quintal for rice procurement, and targeted schemes for potato and mango farmers, along with a dedicated push for the fisheries sector.
On the infrastructure front, the roadmap includes industrial development within 100 days, the establishment of four new industrial townships—including an industrial park in Singur—and new premier institutions such as AIIMS and IIT campuses in North Bengal districts.
Addressing unemployment, the manifesto promises to fill all government job vacancies transparently, with 33% reservation for women, particularly in the police force. It also proposes a five-year extension in the age limit for government job examinations and a one-time financial assistanceof₹15,000 for aspirants. Entrepreneurship and startups receive attention through provisions for loans up to ₹10 lakh for youth-led ventures. Cultural and literary heritage also finds a place in the manifesto, with proposals for a Vande Mataram Museum, a cultural centre dedicated to Rabindranath Tagore, and the development of spiritual tourism circuits. Additionally, there is a commitment to advocate for the inclusion of Kurmali and Rajbanshi languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
In a nutshell the Sankalp Patra of BJP reverberates the mantra of Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and presents not just a roadmap for the stepping stones of development in Bengal rather reinstill the faith of transforming Bengal to Sonar Bangla to contribute to the Prime Minister’s Vision of Viksit Bharat.
