Tracing the Cultural Tradition of Jangalmahal through Folk Music

On 22nd November 2024, the Asiatic Society, Kolkata, hosted a delightful and enriching “Folk Music of Jangal Mahal of West Bengal” at the prestigious Vidyasagar Hall. The event began on a warm and welcoming note with an inspiring address by Lieutenant Colonel Anant Sinha, Administrator of the Asiatic Society. This was followed by a thought-provoking keynote address delivered by Dr. Sk Makbul Islam, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Bengali, St. Paul’s College, Kolkata. Dr. Swapan Mukhopadhyay, Former Professor of the Department of Folklore at Kalyani University, mesmerized the audience with his comprehensive demonstration and illuminating lectures on the rich tapestry of folk music from the Jangal Mahal region.

He vividly brought to life the essence of several folk traditions, including Radha-Ashtami Celebrating the worship of Radha and holy cow, Tusu Gaan: Vibrant songs associated with harvest festivals, Bhakta/Gajoner Gaan: Spiritual melodies devoted to ‘Lord Shiva’, performed through rural rites and rituals, Bihaar/Biyer Gaan: Traditional marriage songs cherished by tribal communities throughout the year and Jawa Karamer Gaan, which celebrates harvest festivals. Light was also shaded on the Manasa Mangal narratives, which honour the snake goddess on the last day (Sankranti) of Shravan, and the enchanting Ahira Geet, sung by cowherds to invoke blessings for agricultural prosperity. He elaborated on Bhadu Gaan, celebrated in the month of Bhadra in honour of Bhadravati, and the ever-popular Jhumur Gaan, a harmonious blend of song, dance, and music that resonates among tribal groups across Bankura, Purulia, Paschim Medinipur. Jhargram, Birbhum, Paschim Burdwan, and even the Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas. The event’s highlight was an enthralling ‘Chhau Dance’ performance, with theme “Asura Binasini”, symbolizing the power and resilience of women (Nari Shakti). The performance captivated the audience with its vibrancy and cultural depth. In a heartwarming gesture, the Asiatic Society felicitated the talented artists from various districts, recognizing their invaluable contributions to preserving and promoting these folk traditions.

The programme concluded on a high note with a vote of thanks delivered by the Administrative Officer Shri Arupratan Bagchi, to the audience, artists, and Society members for their support and participation.
