South City Mall Launches Its Inaugural South City Durgotsav 2026 with Traditional Khuti Puja on Rath Yatra

On the auspicious occasion of Rath Yatra, one of Kolkata’s most iconic landmarks began a new cultural tradition. With the ceremonial Khuti Puja, South City Mall officially announced the launch of South City Durgotsav 2026, its first-ever Durga Puja celebration and the beginning of what is envisioned as a landmark addition to the city’s festive calendar. More than a new destination for Durga Puja, South City Durgotsav seeks to celebrate the history, tradition and culture that have shaped Bengal’s most cherished festival over generations.

While Durga Puja today enjoys worldwide recognition and stands as a symbol of Kolkata’s cultural identity, its early roots and traditions often remain lesser known. Through its inaugural edition, South City aims to honour these origins and celebrate the deep emotional and cultural bond that has united communities for centuries. Envisioned by artist Subhankar Dutta, this year’s showcase centers on the theme ‘JATRA’. Deeply rooted in our history, culture, and tradition, it pays tribute to the journey of Durga Puja and the enduring spirit of togetherness that continues to define Bengal’s festive ethos. The Khuti Puja marked the beginning of months of artistic creation that will culminate during Durga Puja 2026, when South City Mall will transform into an immersive cultural destination celebrating Bengal’s artistry, heritage and festive spirit. Traditional Dhaak performances and the evocative recital of Mahishasur Mardini set the tone for the inaugural ceremony, signalling the arrival of the festive season and the beginning of South City’s own Durga Puja journey.
