NYKS, South Kolkata Vocal on Ban of Single Use Plastic Reminiscing Sacrifices of Freedom Fighters for a New India

On the eve of Gandhiji’s birthday today, Nehru Yuva Kendra, South Kolkata in association with Hind Sangha paid a glorious tribute to the unsung heroes and heroines of our freedom movement with a campaign for ban of single use plastic as a part of attaining ‘Swachh Bharat’ or clean India in the form of a webinar titled ‘Freedom Movement & launch of Clean India Programme’.

The webinar was marked by the presence of a distinguished lady freedom fighter Smt Jyotirmoyee Ghosh, who is now about to reach 95 years and was a staunch follower of Gandhiji. She was jailed for providing food to the freedom fighters in disguise of the hermits and providing them books like Pather Dabi written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay and Anandamath by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. She herself took part in the Dandi March also. Besides, the researchers on Netaji like Dr Jayanta Choudhury, Shri Ashraful Islam and Shri Amitabha Sen spoke on the unheard part of the freedom struggle centering Netaji Subhas Bose.

Dr. Jayanta Choudhury delineated the Homfreyganj Massacre during World War II- a massacre on January 30, 1944, when 44 Indian civilians, suspected of spying were put to death by the Japanese at a point blank range, who were members of the Indian Independence League. Shri Ashraful Islam spoke on 1945 Nilganj massacre that involved mass genocide of 2000 plus Azad Hind Fauj soldiers in the Jhikorgacchha British Detention camp. Shri Amitabha Sen spoke on how Matangini Hazra was fired by the British Police.

Besides, Shri Gautam Chattopadhyay, a NGO-worker campaigning on banning single use plastic spoke on how he is relentlessly fighting against the use of plastics, one of the primary elements responsible for health hazards. His voice against the use of single use plastics started at home. He was also eloquent for Prime Minister’s ‘Make in India’ & ‘Vocal for Local.’

The District Youth Organiser of NYKS, South Kolkata in her welcome address spoke in favour of the awareness generation through the medium of the youths of this country.
