Navigating the Demographic Landscape: Insights from ThinkFest Kolkata
ThinkFest Kolkata, a thought-provoking event organised by SMaRT in association with the Centre for Bharat Studies, delved into the profound impact of population demographics on socio-cultural dynamics. Held at the Indian Museum on September 29, 2024, the event was anchored by Professor Pragati Bandyopadhyay and brought together a distinguished panel of experts to discuss the far-reaching implications of population shifts in India.
The event commenced with a felicitation of the speakers. Following the felicitation, the event proceeded with a lighting of the lamp ceremony, symbolizing the beginning of a new endeavour. Subsequently, a keynote address was delivered by Shri Mahamandaleshwar Swami Paramatmanandaji Maharaj. He drew a parallel between Maa Durga and the strength of Indian society, emphasizing the resilience and power of our nation.
Following Maharaj’s address, a panel discussion was held, featuring eminent experts from various fields. Dr. Sayan Bhattacharya, Deputy Director of the Indian Museum, offered a historical perspective on population dynamics, tracing the evolution of population patterns and their influence on cultural practices and societal structures. He highlighted the significance of archaeological evidence in understanding the long-term consequences of population changes.
Next, Shri Prasenjit Baksi, Consulting Editor at Prasar Bharati, shared his insights on the role of media in shaping public perception and illegal encroachments developing into population issues. He explained how narratives are set to influence people, and emphasized the issue of
how Hindus of Bangladesh are being treated there. He talked about the illegal settlements happening in West Bengal, which need to be taken care of. Finally, he urged for responsible journalism in promoting informed and balanced discussions on population-related topics.
Smt. Debjani Bhattacharya, an eminent columnist and social activist, then took the stage. She focused on the social and economic implications of population shifts, particularly on marginalized communities and women. She also highlighted why Demographic studies are essential for a country. She upheld statistics and pointed out the population-increasing trends in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Technically, Bangladesh’s population has to be increased depending on proportion, but the census shows otherwise. Proving infiltration from Bangladesh and Rohingyas from Myanmar. Ultimately, she emphasized the need for policies that address these issues.
Swami Paramatmananda Maharaj, a renowned spiritual leader, offered a spiritual and philosophical perspective on population dynamics. He emphasized the importance of individual responsibility and collective well-being in addressing population-related challenges.Maharaj called for a holistic approach that balances material progress with spiritual development.
Dr.Debi Prasad Mishra, Director, NITTR, a renowned expert in the field of demography, provided a detailed analysis of how population dynamics can significantly influence cultural practices and societal structures. He discussed the various factors at play, including population growth, ageing, urbanization, and migration, and their implications for cultural evolution.
After the event, the speakers were thanked for their insightful contributions. Their valuable insights and expertise enriched the discussion and provided a deeper understanding of the complex issues surrounding population demographics in India.
