The Lions Club of Kolkata Grand, District 322B1, successfully hosted a press conference today to announce ‘Lionathon 2.0 – We Serve Walk to Serve’, an impactful community initiative dedicated to supporting children suffering from childhood cancer. The main walkathon programme will be held on 7th December 2025, beginning at Deshapriya Park.
During the press meet, the organisers highlighted that nearly 75,000 children in India are diagnosed with cancer every year, yet low awareness and delayed detection continue to be major barriers to timely treatment. They emphasised that early diagnosis can save most of these young lives, making awareness not just essential but lifesaving. Speaking at the press meet, Lion Ajit Baid, President, said, “Lionathon 2.0 is not just a walk—it’s a movement of collective responsibility. Childhood cancer is a battle no child should face alone, and through this initiative, we hope to strengthen awareness and ensure timely intervention for every young fighter.”
Adding to this, Lion Neetu Baid, Chairperson, shared, “Our vision is to build a compassionate and informed community. Early diagnosis can change the destiny of thousands of children. With this programme, we are also committed to providing free cervical vaccinations to 1,000 underprivileged children.” Lion Sushil Soni, Secretary, stated, The walk symbolises hope, resilience, and unity. Something as simple as awareness can save lives. Lionathon 2.0 is our effort to bring communities together to support families navigating the toughest phase of their lives.” Emphasising the financial and emotional support extended through the initiative, Lion GirirAj Chandak, Treasurer, said, “Every step taken during Lionathon 2.0 reflects our commitment to serving society with empathy and purpose. Our aim is to create long-term impact by encouraging participation and promoting preventive healthcare.”
The organisers also revealed the official marathon route: The walk will start from Deshapriya Park South Gate → Southern Avenue → Golpark Crossing → Gariahat Crossing → Rashbehari Avenue → Sarat Bose Road → concluding at Lions Children Corner, the final endpoint. The press meet concluded with a call to action, urging citizens, organisations, and supporters to join the movement on 7th December and walk for awareness, hope, and healing—creating a world where no child battles cancer alone.
