Jugalbandi 2.0 showcases the true meaning of resilience and inclusion

The Department of Neurorehabilitation at the Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata (I-NK) organised a historic and first-of-its-kind initiative in Eastern India—Jugalbandi on March 16, 2025. In 2022, I-NK pioneered this groundbreaking 5km marathon that brought together able-bodied runners and wheelchair users, showcasing the true meaning of resilience and inclusion.
The event was flagged off by renowned cricketer-turned-politician Lakshmi Ratan Shukla.
Jugalbandi, meaning ‘a harmonious partnership,’ embodies the collaboration of those on foot and those on wheels, demonstrating that true strength lies in unity. Building on the remarkable success of its inaugural edition in 2022, this year’s event featured over 30 wheelchair participants across states joining forces with able-bodied runners, sending a powerful message of solidarity and perseverance.
Jugalbandi 2.0 goes beyond competition—it is a movement dedicated to reshaping societal perspectives on disability, redefining strength, and proving that no barrier is insurmountable. This event witnessed wheelchair users and able-bodied individuals running side by side, demonstrating that true power emerges when people uplift one another.
For many, this marathon signifies a personal milestone, marking a triumphant return to confidence and independence following life-changing injuries or medical conditions. It stands as a living outcome to determination, support, and the unbreakable human spirit.
Dr. Suparna Gangopadhyay, Director of the Department of Neurorehabilitation and College of Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy, I-NK, emphasises that emotional well-being is as critical as physical therapy in overcoming obstacles. He asserts, “Even the smallest encouragement can be life-changing for someone who believes movement is beyond their reach after an unexpected pause in life. Beyond medical intervention, what truly fuels progress is emotional support and the confidence to aim higher.” His perspective captures the spirit of Jugalbandi 2.0—an initiative aimed at restoring hope, self-belief, and limitless possibilities.
