It originated when a group of non-resident Bengali neurosurgeons living in the west saw the exodus of patients from Bengal to the advanced neurosciences centres in the other parts of the country, due to lack of infrastructure in the 80’s. They decided to raise fund from all over the world to establish an institute in Kolkata. with the idea that the institute would be non-profit, affordable, and having highest form of skill. Today it has 210 beds. 70 non-practicing consultants, and 350 nurses. 1 Consultant intensivist, 1 consultant neurosurgeon, and 1 consultant anaesthetist are on duty at night so that any neuro emergency can be treated on the spot by a consultant. This is an unique feature in the city. With the increasing demand I-NK has acquired a new clinic building at 6B, AJC Bose Road, a Research and Diagnostic Building at 10 West Range, an upcoming building in the existing space, and in the process of acquiring a 4 storey building on Park street for starting a college of Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy approved by the WBUHS from July 2023.
