Indian-American NASA scientist talks about Space and Science with Students

When Swati Mohan was one year old, she immigrated from India to the USA. She was inspired by “Star Trek” and ended up getting a doctorate at MIT. NASA engineer Swati Mohan was the one who exclaimed: “the landing was confirmed. “Perseverance” is safe on the surface of Mars, ready to start looking for signs of a previous life”.
While she wanted to become a paediatrician until she was 16, she later decided to become an engineer and pursue her interest in space exploration. Raised in the Northern Virginia-Washington DC metro area, she completed her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, and her M.S. and Ph.D from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Aeronautics/Astronautics.
Several students of the city interacted with Swati Mohan during a programme at the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum as part of National Science Day celebrations. She encourged students to create their own support system and actively do their best along the journey. “Failure teaches us more than success and it take perseverence. Every step forward is step in the (right) direction,” she said. The session was hosted in association with US Consulate General Kolkata.
