Greening Kolkata: Celebrating Environment Day with Visionary Leadership and Sustainable Initiatives

As the world comes together to celebrate World Environment Day, the Kolkata Chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) is proud to unveil its transformative vision aimed at driving the city towards a sustainable and eco-friendly future. Under the visionary leadership of the chapter chair, Mr. Sushil Mohta, these initiatives reflect Kolkata’s unwavering commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

This year’s theme, focusing on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience, underscores the critical role that green buildings play in protecting natural habitats, promoting vegetation, and enhancing water efficiency.

Green India 2050:

The Indian Green Building believes that green buildings are more than just structures; they are integral to our ecosystem, supporting land restoration and water conservation. Our Green India 2050 campaign aims to align building practices with environmental sustainability to address the urgent challenges of desertification and drought. This initiative seeks to:

·        Expand the country’s green cover by 50%

·        Implement advanced water efficiency measures to combat drought

·        Integrate natural habitat conservation into urban development plans

Under Mohta’s leadership, the Kolkata Chapter aims to rank among the top 3 regions for green building footprint with 20 registered Million Sq.Ft. with 2000 Green Building Projects in next couple of years. Committed to accelerating the development of green buildings, Sushil Mohta and his team highlight “Our rating systems are designed to foster practices that restore land and conserve water. By prioritizing vegetation and habitat preservation, and adopting advanced water efficiency techniques, green buildings can significantly mitigate the impacts of desertification and drought.”

Green Building Rating Systems: A Blueprint for Sustainability

The IGBC’s 32 rating systems for green buildings serve as a blueprint for sustainable development, ensuring that construction and renovation projects prioritize environmental considerations. These systems emphasize:

·        Natural Habitat and Vegetation: Encouraging the preservation and integration of natural landscapes within urban settings.

·        Water Efficiency: Implementing innovative water management practices to enhance drought resilience and promote efficient water use.

Strategic Initiatives for a Sustainable Future

Envisioning strategic initiatives and policies aimed at increasing the Net Zero and Green Building Footprint across the country, Mohta aims to harness the potential of green buildings as catalysts.for sustainable development, he emphasizes the importance of aligning these efforts with the national goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2070. The IGBC’s focus on the Three Ps—Planet, People, and Profit—aims to mitigate the impact of climate change while fostering economic growth and social well-being.

A Vision for a Greener Kolkata and a Greener Nation:

Mohta’s vision for the IGBC Kolkata Chapter is rooted in the belief that sustainable building practices are essential for the health of our planet and communities. “On this Environment Day, we renew our commitment to creating a sustainable future through the promotion of green buildings. By integrating natural habitat preservation and water efficiency into our urban development strategies, we can build a greener, more resilient Kolkata,” he concludes.

The IGBC Kolkata Chapter looks forward to embarking on this transformative journey towards a greener, more sustainable future, guided by Mohta’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment.
