Spinal disorders are on a rise in India and OLIF can help reduce treatment duration and hospital staysNationally acclaimed spine surgeons Dr Amit Jhala, Dr Umesh Srikantha, Dr Christopher Gerber and Dr AnindyaBasu discuss the incidence, management and innovations in spinal treatment at a press meet at Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata(I-NK)

The occurrence of low back pain in India is alarming with nearly 60% of its people having suffered from low back pain at some time during their lifetime.Lumbar spine disorders are on a rise in India with people as young as 16 to 34 years suffering from degenerative spinal problems. A majority of back and leg pain originates from the lumbar spine which bears a lot of stress and pressure and hence is prone to early wear and tear. While there are several options available to treat degenerative lumbar spine disorders, the oblique lateral interbody fusion technique (OLIF) is gaining popularity as a treatment modality. This minimally invasive spinal fusion procedure helps in achieving better outcomes than traditional spine surgery by making use of smaller skin cuts. Some reasons for this include lower surgery related morbidity, decreased postoperative pain and reduced operating time and hospital stay. OLIF allows for more degree of spinal deformity correction options and larger surface area for spinal fusion.

Given the rise in the number of degenerative spinal disorders, the need of the hour is to raise awareness about the availability of minimally invasive spinal surgical techniques like OLIF. We are thankful to our visiting faculties Dr Amit Jhala(Ahmedabad) and Dr Umesh Srikantha (Bengaluru) for being with us today and sharing their experience and global best practices in the treatment of spinal disorders. This academic endeavor is being attended by Spine surgeons and Neurosurgeons from all over the country. Surgeons from Chennai, Hubli, Bhubaneshwar, Hyderabad, Patna, Ranchi and Guwahati have made their way to our hospital in the middle of the pandemic to learn this new surgical technique that will help them serve their patients in a better way. This kind of a training programme for OLIF surgery is being conducted for the first time in Eastern India. I-NK,being the brainchild of famous UK based Neurosurgeon Professor RP Sengupta, is committed to teaching and training of surgeons of this part of the country.

So far, over 50 spine surgeons from all over the country have used OLIF and have passed on the benefits to over thousands of Indian patients. It is imperative to consult a surgeon for a complete list of indications, warnings, precautions, adverse events, clinical results, and other important medical information. With the growth of population, there will be a commensurate increase in the demand for safe spine surgery to ensure better quality of life – and OLIF can help achieve this. This specialized spine surgery is now available to the patients of Eastern India at Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata.
