Elite camp led by foreign women’s coaches aim to identify talent

Experts feels there are exciting days ahead for women’s football in India. It has made massive strides in recent times.

Women In Sports: Elite Camp was organised in the city by Women In Sports, supported by FPAI and Debanjan Sen Foundation. It is a first of its kind elite footballers trial in the country for women footballers playing in the Senior National Team or IWL where coaches from Rangers FC (Scotland), Melbourne Victory (Australia), Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia), Western Sydney FC (Australia) & Marbella FC (Spain) are present to evaluate players and present opportunities of playing abroad professionally.

They will be watching, coaching and analyzing some of India’s best female players over practice sessions and seeing who can fit into foreign clubs as fully professional players. This will be the first ever open Women’s Trials in India giving the girls a real good chance of show casing their full potential.

Tom Sermanni, Head of Women’s Football (Western Sydney Wanderers FC) has shed light on his opinion about the growth of women’s football in India.”India has huge potential. The country is really developing at a spectacular pace with some very good players coming through.”

“This camp will give women’s football an opportunity which has not been provided before,” said Sanaya Mehta, founder, Women in Sports. “Rather than funding a couple of women footballers for trials (abroad), we thought it was best to invite foreign coaches here and get them to see India’s best players together.”

“We have got fantastic response from coaches across the world. So many girls are coming (for trials). It’s the first time we are organising something like this. We will learn from this experience. Hopefully some girls will join foreign clubs and then give something back to the game,” said Mehta.
