History of Children’s Day in India
Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad in a Kashmiri Brahmin family. The people of that family were very famous for their scholarship and administrative ability. Besides Jawaharlal, there were three more children in the family. But Jawaharlal was the eldest of them all.
Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal’s father, was a lawyer by profession. Along with this, he was also leading the Indian independence movement. In this sequence, he became one of Gandhi’s most prominent assistants. Nehru settled in Delhi with his family in the 18th century.
By the age of 16, a series of teachers used to educate him English, Hindi, and Sanskrit at home. Later, he moved to London for further studies at Harrow, an educational institution. Although it is said that Nehru had an average performance in studies.
During India’s freedom struggle in 1947, Nehru became a leader under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi. He played an important role in the creation of an independent India, keeping socialism, democracy, and secularism paramount. It is believed that the modern India we see today was architected by him.
Jawaharlal Nehru was affectionate towards children. He believed that children are the future and strength of an independent India. Children affectionately call him Chacha Nehru. The reason for this is believed to be the relation between Gandhi Ji and him.
Jawaharlal was very close to Mahatma Gandhi and was seen as his younger brother. Since we call Gandhiji Bapu, so Nehru is called Chacha. Though it is just a notion, it shows the loving relationship between Jawaharlal and the children. Jawaharlal Nehru passed away due to a heart attack on 27 May 1964.
Remembering Jawaharlal Nehru’s work and love for children, a resolution was passed to honor him after his death. In that resolution, an official announcement was made to celebrate his birth anniversary as Children’s Day.
Before this resolution, India used to celebrate Universal Children’s Day on 20 November like other countries. Universal Children’s Day was declared by the United Nations to commemorate the importance of child rights. But now, India has changed the day of celebration to honor our first Prime Minister.
