India is the largest provider of generic drugs globally. Indian pharmaceutical sector industry supplies over 50 per cent of global demand for various vaccines, 40 per cent of generic demand in the US and 25 per cent of all medicine in UK.
The Indian government has taken many steps to reduce costs and bring down healthcare expenses. Speedy introduction of generic drugs into the market has remained in focus and is expected to benefit the Indian pharmaceutical companies. In addition, the thrust on rural health programmes, lifesaving drugs and preventive vaccines also augurs well for the pharmaceutical companies.
Indian Pharmaceutical Association(IPA) organized “National PharmacyWeek”throughout India for the upliftment of the profession of pharmacy so as to ultimately serve the patients in a better way.
IPA, Bengal Branch celebrated the week in a befitting manner through various programs spread across the state of WestBengal, starting with an inaugural function on 17th November 2019 at the Gandhi Bhavan, JadavpurUniversity.
Several distinguished scientists and Govt. officers were present in the programme. Dr.RaoV.S.V.Vadlamudi,President,CommonwealthPharmacists Association & Professional Secretary, SEARPharmForum, Dr.T.V.Narayana, National President, Indian Pharmaceutical Association & President, SEARPharm Forum and Sunita Grover, Director of Drugs Control, Govt.of West Bengal graced the occasion.
This year’s theme was “Pharmacists:Your medication Counselor”. Through this theme we are trying to focus the important role of the pharmacists in medication counseling to improve therapeutic outcome. It is a fact that a huge no of death occur due to medication error through out the globe and India is not an exception. Improper use of medicine could develop adverse drug reaction,low or not herapeutic outcome and sometimes leading to death.As the pharmacists have knowledge and training as medication counselor and there is no dearth of Pharmacist in India their services can be properly utilize by the healthcare system.But unfortunately their services are not utilized or underutilized in ourcountry.
