Grandparents are the family’s greatest treasure, family’s strong foundation. Through their special love and care, grandparents keep a family close at heart. All over the world, “many elderly people have experienced terrible isolation. Families, grandchildren, mothers and fathers, friends and neighbours have been separated, distanced, and many have lost loved one”.
Grandparents can play a pivotal role in ensuring that the faith is passed on to their grandchildren in secularized societies, Pope Francis said earlier this year at a Vatican conference on pastoral care for the elderly.
In January, Pope Francis established the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, to take place annually on the fourth Sunday of July, close to the feast of the grandparents of Jesus, Saints Anne and Joachim. The theme of this year’s grandparents’ day is “I am with you always,” taken from Matthew 28:20.
Catholic Association of Bengal (CAB) celebrated grand parents day in St. Catherine’s home with the elderly. CAB president Angelina Mantosh Jasnani said”At the CAB we are celebrating grand parents day today as told by his holiness Pope Francis. Archbishop in his notice said to celebrate too. As archbishop notice says that children below 18 and people above 60 cannot attend Sunday church. So the Catholic Association of Bengal thought of spending a couple of hours at the old age home St Catherine’s sharing some goodies with the grandparents who can’t be with there grand children.”
The success of the event was evident through the joyful smiles and teary eyes of the grandparents.
