Calcutta Chamber of Commerce hosts an insightful session on New Labour Codes, Latest Policies & Practices 2025

The Calcutta Chamber of Commerce organised an interactive session on India’s new labour law reforms with CA Vivek Agarwal, labour law expert and guest faculty at ESIC, Kolkata. Welcoming the gathering, Shri Hari Shankar Halwasiya, President of the Chamber, described the consolidation of 29 central legislations into four labour codes as one of the most significant reforms since independence. He noted that the codes aim to simplify compliance through one registration, one licence, and one return, while extending minimum wage and social security benefits across organised, unorganised, and self-employed sectors. He further highlighted that with nearly 80–90% of India’s workforce in the informal sector contributing about 50% of GDP, the reforms seek to drive formalisation and wider access to welfare schemes. However, he cautioned that SMEs and startups may encounter new compliance and resource challenges during the transition.
Shri Anant Saharia, Senior Vice President of the Chamber, and Shri P. D. Rungta, Senior Committee Member, also graced the occasion and extended their support to the initiative. Their presence reinforced the Chamber’s collective commitment to guiding industry members through the opportunities and challenges of the evolving regulatory framework.
The event underscored the Chamber’s dedication to knowledge-sharing and supporting businesses in adapting to India’s changing labour and economic landscape.
