Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign for Early Detection of Cancer

Observing October as the Breast Cancer awareness month, HCG EKO Cancer Centre Kolkata conducted an on-ground breast cancer awareness campaign across traffic junctions in Kolkata. This awareness campaign was initiated to spread awareness on the importance of early detection of breast cancer and the consequences of neglecting the initial signs and not reaching out for breast cancer screening. Volunteers stood with pink ribbons, balloons, and placards with various messages like ‘The Best Protection is in Early Detection’, ‘Take Action & Get Screened’, ‘Your Body , Your Responsibility’, ‘Breast Self-Examination is the Key’, ‘Annual mammography puts you a step ahead of breast cancer’, etc, at major traffic junctions in the city, including Biswa Bangla Gate, Newtown and College More, Sector 5 and Salt Lake.
This year’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month is themed as ‘close the care gap’ keeping in mind the inequities in cancer care and taking necessary actions to address them.  Breast cancer care in particular and cancer care in general in the country still remains inaccessible to many. Lack of awareness, breast cancer-related social stigma and the fear to overcome inhibitions and go for screening are the major challenges faced by cancer care in India.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Amrita Chakraborty, consultant, onco-radiology, HCG EKO Cancer Centre Kolkata said “It is essential for people to understand the importance of breast cancer screening and early detection. Late detection could lead to the spread of the disease to other parts of the body making it difficult to control the disease and attain a complete cure. However, if detected early breast cancer can be cured completely. Our awareness campaign is aimed at making people realize the same and encouraging them to go for screening at the right time and bridge the existing cancer care gap.”
