Blending Tradition with Well-Being: KVIC Unveils Khadi Wellness Wear Brand Svadha

As India’s wellness movement gathers pace, two timeless traditions are finding common ground—yoga, the ancient practice of holistic health, and khadi, the handspun fabric that has long symbolised self-reliance and sustainability. In a landmark initiative ahead of International Yoga Day, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has launched Svadha, a wellness wear brand that reimagines khadi for modern lifestyles.
A Fabric with Soul
Crafted by the Centre of Excellence for Khadi (CoEK), ‘स्वधा’ (Svadha) is more than clothing—it is a philosophy. Rooted in the Atharvaveda, the word svadha signifies ease, comfort, and spiritual contentment. True to its name, the collection embraces simplicity, balance, and adaptability, offering garments that flow seamlessly from yoga practice to everyday wear.
KVIC Chairman Shri Manoj Goel, who inaugurated the collection at the NIFT campus in New Delhi on Friday, described khadi as “not merely a fabric but a legacy of Gandhiji—a symbol of self-reliance, environmental consciousness, and rural empowerment.” He emphasised that Svadha represents the harmonious blending of two great Indian traditions: yoga and khadi.
Designed for Mindful Living
The collection features nine relaxed-fit styles, most of them free-size and gender-neutral, designed for ease of movement and all-day comfort. Sourced from three distinguished Khadi institutions—Gandhigram Khadi & V.I. Public Charitable Trust (Tamil Nadu), Payyanur Firka Gramodaya Khadi Sangh (Kerala), and Kshetriya Punjab Khadi Mandal (Punjab)—the fabrics highlight khadi’s natural qualities: breathability, softness, and lightness.
Fashion designer Payel Kumari, part of the creative team, explained: “Wellness wear is about supporting both physical and mental well-being. That’s why we use light colours and lightweight fabrics—they evoke calm, regulate body temperature, and allow unrestricted movement.”
Beyond the Mat
Unlike conventional activewear, Svadha is designed to extend beyond yoga sessions. Its understated elegance and versatile silhouettes make it suitable for daily dressing, embodying the philosophy of conscious living. The garments reflect a mindful approach to fashion—minimalist, sustainable, and deeply connected to India’s cultural heritage.
A Vision for the Future
The launch of Svadha comes at a time when KVIC is experiencing unprecedented growth. In 2025–26, the sector achieved record sales of ₹1.87 lakh crore, powered by millions of artisans and weavers across India. Shri Goel credited this success to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Vocal for Local and Aatmanirbhar Bharat, noting that KVIC now aims for an ambitious turnover of ₹2.51 lakh crore while providing livelihoods to over 2 crore people nationwide.
Yoga, Khadi, and Global Identity
International Yoga Day, observed annually on June 21, celebrates the union of body, mind, and spirit. With Svadha, KVIC brings this philosophy into the realm of clothing, weaving together yoga’s holistic ethos with khadi’s timeless identity.
In doing so, Svadha positions khadi not just as a fabric of the past, but as a fabric of the future—one that embodies sustainability, well-being, and India’s journey from local heritage to global relevance.
