
The Chinese martial art Wushu, known for its flashy style, is gaining followers in India. In the recently concluded Asian Games 2018, India won four medals in Wushu.
Sandhya Rani Devi, first Indian Wushu Player who got Arjuna Award wants to raise awareness of Wushu as a professional sport. She interacted with young Wushu players during the 19th Sub Junior National Wushu Championship 2019. She is optimistic about the future of Wushu in India.
“I hope my journey will serve as an inspiration to those trying to make a career out of Wushu in India. One of my childhood friends told me to try Wushu. I played my first Wushu national at the end of 2004 and won a silver medal there.” said Sandhya. She added “Wushu is a fast emerging game in India and young boys and girls are taking keen interest in this game.”
“Sandhya Rani Devi is now a role-model for so many youngster. Our wushu fighters have been earning medals at various levels.They are very good coaches. We’ve already noticed that. Our practitioners are also happy with their training methods.The way Indian Wushu players are doing hard work, one can predict a bright future of this game in India.” said Gautam Seth, Chief Coach of WB & International Medalist.
In his view it’s the best martial art as well as a good form of exercise. “Wushu is an excellent choice for self defense, discipline and fitness.” said Gautam Seth.
