A Vision of Care and Community: Transforming Lives Through Healthcare, Education, and Empowerment

Set in the heart of Chittaranjan Park (C R Park), often affectionately called “Mini Kolkata” in Delhi’s National Capital Region, the Help and Heal Foundation Trust hosted the third edition of the Chaitra Mela. This two-day event, held from March 29 to March 30, 2025, at the premises of  Purbosree Mahila Samiti, C R Park, New Delhi, has been recognized as a pivotal milestone, underscoring its significance and impact.

The Chaitra Mela, a cherished folk fair, marks the concluding days of the Bengali calendar month of Chaitra. This vibrant festival highlights the rich cultural heritage of Bengal, showcasing an array of fruits, sweets, toys, handlooms, and handicrafts crafted from materials such as bamboo, cane, plastic, and clay.
Healthcare: The Core of Chaitra Mela. While the fair’s cultural programs and festivities added to the liveliness, the primary focus of the Chaitra Mela remained its multi-specialty medical camp. Designed as a compassionate initiative, the camp offered complimentary consultations and health checks, targeting senior residents and those in distress. Distinguished doctors from leading hospitals across Delhi provided expert advice and care, embodying the foundation’s commitment to healthcare for all.
The medical camp, spanning two days, became a beacon of hope for the community. Activities such as free consultations, legal assistance, and specialized medical tests—including mammography, bone mineral density (BMD) assessments, and pulmonary function tests (PFT)—enhanced its impact. This year saw participation from reputed hospitals, including Max, PSRI, Apollo, and Fortis Escorts, offering their specialized services and strengthening the initiative’s credibility.
Fostering Talent and Togetherness. In addition to healthcare, the Chaitra Mela celebrated the talents of specially abled children, senior citizens, and emerging local artists. Performances by renowned artists from Bengal complemented the atmosphere, while stalls showcased intricate handicrafts, handloom items, and Sonajhuri handicrafts from Shantiniketan. Culinary delights and beverages added further charm, ensuring something for every attendee.
A Growing Legacy The foundation’s annual Chaitra Mela is not just an event; it’s a platform that promotes health awareness, community bonding, and cultural preservation. In 2024, over 350 individuals benefited from free consultations and tests, including mammography screenings for approximately 50 women. This tradition of care and cultural vibrancy reflects the foundation’s dedication to uplifting lives.
Expressing heartfelt gratitude, Air Commodore Swapan Samaddar VSM (Retd), President of the Help and Heal Foundation Trust, shared, “Over the past two years, the Trust has successfully organized six Free Multi-Specialty Medical and Legal Camps, extended assistance to numerous elderly, needy, and underprivileged individuals, and facilitated hospital admissions for senior citizens during emergencies. Additionally, we have distributed food and warm clothing to the underprivileged during winter and hosted the Second Chaitra Mela, coinciding with a multi-specialty medical camp and cultural events dedicated to differently abled and disadvantaged children.
“Our vision and mission encompass the following flagship programs: (i) Healthcare and healing for all; (ii) Legal assistance for seniors and distressed individuals; (iii) Quality education for the underprivileged; (iv) Women empowerment; and (v) Green environment initiatives. We are committed to implementing these programs as we advance in partnership with collaborators to build an effective and impactful institution. Our activities are conducted in coordination with local bodies, oversight agencies, and collaborations with various hospitals. Encouraged by the success of our medical camps, we are fully committed to realizing our flagship programs.”
He further acknowledged, “We deeply appreciate the unwavering support of hospitals such as Max, PSRI, Apollo, and Fortis Escorts. Last year, in collaboration with Max Hospital, we introduced a fully equipped medical van for mammography screenings, benefitting around 50 women. While this year’s target for mammography screenings may fall short, we remain determined to continue our efforts.”
Hundreds of residents in and around Chittaranjan Park, spanning diverse socio-economic backgrounds, visit the Chaitra Mela daily. The event enriches participants with socio-cultural experiences while providing access to vital medical assistance and legal advice. Reflecting on this, Air Commodore Samaddar remarked, “We aim to make the Chaitra Mela a comprehensive solution center, offering medical and legal aid to those in need. This year, we arranged specialized doctors across fields such as dental care, internal medicine, orthopedics, pulmonology, gynecology, and physiotherapy, ensuring numerous residents from the local community and NCR benefitted from the Free Multi-Specialty Medical Camp.”
The Foundation’s initiatives extend far beyond healthcare, encompassing year-round efforts to provide educational support for underprivileged children, assistance to senior citizens and distressed individuals, and medical aid for those in need. Furthermore, it organizes socio-cultural activities like book fairs, literary programs, sporting events, and melas to celebrate and nurture local talent.
The medical camp and cultural event exemplify the transformative power of collective action, inspiring hope and fostering a sense of belonging within the community.
