A mesmerizing musical evening

 

A versatile and noted Indian singer, Shubha Mudgal mesmerised music lovers when she performed in the city at the Celebration of the 30th anniversary of Sangeet Piyasi. She was accompanied by  tabla artist (and husband) Aneesh Pradhan and Sudhir Nayak on harmonium. Guests who were looking forward to her performance and were not disappointed and the evening proved to be a delightful one for all.

Talking about her experience performing in Kolkata, Shubha Mudgal said “I think it’s an opportunity that I would not have missed to be invited by an eminent artist like  Pt. Samar Saha for this concert.It Iis special occasion for all of us to be invited and to be back in this music loving city is always a good experience.”

Shubha Mudgal has specialised in the Hindustani classical genres of khayal and thumi-dadra. She is the recipient of several national and international awards. With deep roots in the magical and diverse world of Indian music, Mudgal has been a student, performer, teacher, composer and columnist for several decades. Her debut collection of short stories revolves around the music that has nurtured and helped find her voice.

When asked what role music can play in society , she said, “Music can only play a roll if society believes that art is of importance.Unfortunetely in our country art has been declared non essential and I am afraid that is something I completely disagree with.So unless society believes that arts are essential to the wellbeing of society then really music cannot play a roll on its own. We are doing art and artists are doing whatever they can can but it is up to people to realise how valuable and how nourishing arts are.”
