67-year-old woman diagnosed with multiple aggressive cancers benefit from multidisciplinary cancer care

A 67-year-old woman with multiple pre-existing health conditions, including diabetes, thyroid disorder, and high cholesterol, has demonstrated an extraordinary recovery after being diagnosed with two aggressive cancers simultaneously. Her successful treatment at Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre & Research Institute highlights the power of advanced, multidisciplinary cancer care.

In November 2021, she presented with a lump in her right breast along with abdominal swelling. Detailed diagnostic investigations revealed triple negative breast cancer, an aggressive subtype, along with advanced ovarian cancer that had already spread within the abdomen. Given the rare co-occurrence of these cancers, doctors suspected Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome (HBOC). Subsequent germline genetic testing confirmed the presence of a BRCA2 mutation, which played a crucial role in guiding her treatment plan. Despite the seriousness of her condition, a comprehensive and structured treatment approach was initiated. She first underwent chemotherapy to shrink the tumors, followed by a major surgery in February 2022 to remove both breasts, including preventive removal of the left breast.

Post-surgical reports showed a complete response in breast cancer, which is considered a highly positive outcome. To further control both cancers, she received additional chemotherapy. In June 2022, she underwent another major surgery to remove the uterus, ovaries, and affected abdominal tissues. Based on her BRCA-positive status, she was then started on targeted maintenance therapy with Olaparib, a therapy that specifically benefits patients with such genetic mutations by improving long-term disease control. Her recovery has been remarkable. Cancer marker levels returned to normal, and multiple follow-up scans over the past three years have shown no evidence of recurrence. As of March 2026, she remains disease-free and clinically stable. This case reinforces that even advanced-stage cancers can have positive outcomes with timely diagnosis, appropriate and holistic treatment, and consistent follow-up. It also underscores the growing importance of genetic testing and personalized medicine in modern oncology.

Her journey stands as a powerful message of hope, resilience, and the transformative impact of medical advancement.  Anjan Gupta said “This remarkable recovery reflects the strength of integrated cancer care and the patient’s resilience. At Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre, we remain committed to combining advanced diagnostics, personalized treatment, and compassionate support. Stories like this reinforce our belief that even complex cancer cases can achieve positive outcomes with timely intervention and a multidisciplinary approach.” Dr Arnab Gupta added, “This case highlights the critical role of precision medicine in oncology. The identification of a BRCA1 mutation allowed us to tailor targeted therapy, significantly improving outcomes. Despite advanced disease, a structured treatment plan, adherence, and continuous monitoring enabled long-term remission, offering hope that science-driven, individualized care can transform cancer survival.”
