The 47th edition of the All India Major Port Hockey Championship 2026 was inaugurated on Tuesday at the SAI Kolkata Hockey Ground, marking the beginning of an exciting four-day sporting spectacle. The prestigious tournament was formally inaugurated in the presence of senior officials of the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority, including Chairman Rathendra Raman, Secretary Chandan Chatterjee, Chief Engineer Santanu Mitra, FA & CAO Prateep Lala, and CMO Dr Dipak Dutta.
The championship, scheduled from March 24 to March 27, features six prominent teams from major ports across India — SMP Kolkata, MBPA Mumbai, PPA Paradeep, CHPA Chennai, VOC Tuticorin, and VPA Visakhapatnam — all set to battle for top honours. Speaking at the inauguration, Chairman Rathendra Raman expressed pride in hosting the tournament for the second consecutive year.
He emphasized the importance of such events in promoting sports culture and strengthening camaraderie among port organizations across the country. Adding to this, Sports Officer Suhas Bhattcharjee highlighted the significance of the championship, stating that organizing such a prestigious event is both an honour and a joyful opportunity for interaction and bonding among participants.
The tournament brings together some of the finest hockey talents from India’s major ports, promising high-intensity matches and a platform for emerging players to showcase their skills. With competitive fixtures lined up over the next four days, the championship is expected to deliver thrilling action for hockey enthusiasts in the city.
