41th State Handball Championship just concludes

Apart from the mainstream sports, there have been many other sports which have potential to become successful at the global stage. One such sport is handball.

 

“It is a seven-a-side sport comprising two halves of 30 minutes each, during which players move the ball by passing, dribbling, or hitting it with any part of their bodies above the knee.” said Rohit Kumar Biswas, handball player who played Open National.

Indian national handball player Imran Ali said “Handball is a popular and much followed sport globally and with a large youth population in India, there has been a steady rise in the appetite for new age sports.” Imran added “Sufficient funding would accelerate the growth of both men’s and women’s handball in India, providing it with a much-needed boost not just at elite level but also at the grassroots.”

 

41th State Handball championship organised by West Bengal State Handball Association was inaugurated by Swapan Banerjee(President of Bengal Olympic Association).

This was a knockout basis tournament. Due to covid situation West Bengal State Handball Association organised it on the knockout basis for safety of the players.

As per the West Bengal Government rules and regulations,  all the players were fully vaccinated .

Total 10 districts consisting of 16 players in each team participated in this championship.

Women’s team category was won by Nadia District who defeated Kolkata District

by 5 goals. While men’s team of Paschim Bardhaman won the State Championship by defeating Kolkata District 9-8.

 

Speaking on the occasion, Tapan Kr Chandra NSNIS-Handball Coach & Secretary of the Association said “This event will infuse fresh breath to the sport which has immense potential at the grassroots level. Handball is an Olympic sport and India is looked at as the next big thing by the international federation in terms of talent and opportunities. Handball has been making rapid strides in India in recent times.”
